Resident Director & Student Activities Coordinator
Under general supervision, this full-time, live-in professional staff member will independently carry out a wide range of administrative and leadership responsibilities in student housing and campus programming. The position supports the mission of Bethany College by fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaged residential community.
This position is classified as exempt and salaried under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
This position is a dual role position.
- Director of Student Affairs (for Student Activities Board & SGA advising)
- Executive Director of Student Affairs (for Resident Director responsibilities)
POSITIONS REPORTING TO THIS POSITION:
- Resident Assistants
- Student Activities Board members,
- Student Government Association e-board members.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Resident Director
- Lead a staff of Resident Assistants in developing the community and responding to the needs of approximately 100-240 residents
- Conduct weekly staff meetings with the RA staff
- Schedule and supervise RA duty
- Document recurring issues noted in the Duty Log emails; report to the Executive Director of Student Affairs
- Conduct monthly health and safety inspections with RA staff; follow up and report when necessary
- Report violations of the Community Standards to the Executive Director of Student Affairs
- Participate in the recruitment, selection, and training of RA staff
- Assist with monthly in-service training for the RA staff
- Evaluate the performance of each staff member at least once a semester
- Rotate on-call duty with other Resident Directors, including weekends, vacation periods, and holidays
- Respond in emergent situations
- Attend weekly Staff Meetings and weekly/biweekly one-on-one meetings with the Executive Director of Student Affairs
- Coordinate programming within the hall
Student Activities Board (SAB) Advisor
- Serve as the advisor for the Student Activities Board, which includes the selection, training, advising, and supervision of the board members in all aspects of event planning
- Serve as the primary staff person in attendance at SAB events
- Oversee the SAB budget, including the allocation process
- Work with agents in negotiating and requesting contracts
- Oversee the selection and ordering of all items related to the Board as well as event items
- Attend the Regional or National conference for the National Association of Campus Activities, as the budget allows
- Attend weekly staff meetings of the board
Swede Government Association (SGA) Advisor
- Serve as the advisor for the Swede Government Association, which includes the training, advising, and supervision of the e-board members in all aspects of event planning
- Serve as the primary staff person in attendance at SGA events
- Oversee the SGA budget, including the allocation process
- Oversee the selection and ordering of all items related to the organization as well as event items
- Attend weekly staff meetings for both the executive board and the general board
General Student Affairs
- Establish and maintain 40 office hours weekly in the Office of Student Affairs
- Provide leadership through conduct, attitude, and professionalism. Set a standard and tone that will reflect well on the Division of Student Affairs and the College and will, as a result, provide students with a positive role model
- Understand the College’s policies and procedures and exercise judgment accordingly. Recommend policy changes and develop procedures to improve the Hall’s operation. Assure that students are safe, and that confidential College information is handled appropriately
- Function as an active and cooperative member of the Division of Student Affairs and support the mission and goals of the department. Maintain active involvement in all student affairs activities and assist when necessary
- Participate in Student Outreach for various mental health and retention needs
- Support the Retention Committee with all efforts related to the retention of current Bethany College students through work in activities and residence life
- Other duties as assigned

POSITION CLASSIFICATION
Employment Classification: Full-time, exempt (FLSA), salary
Expected Hours: This position requires irregular, extended hours, including frequent evening and weekend commitments. A standard 40-hour workweek may be exceeded depending on seasonal needs (e.g., student move-in, orientation, campus events)
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university required;
- 1-2 years of related experience in residence life, student programming, or campus advising preferred.
EXPERIENCE
- Ability to function professionally in stressful and possibly emergent situations;
- Ability to provide accurate information on an impromptu basis;
- Ability to work evening/weekend hours and travel as needed;
- Good communication skills, organized, and able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously;
- Ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences, including students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, administration, and the community-at-large;
- Highly motivated and works well both independently and in a team environment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- The work environment involves some exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals; it also includes exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases.
- Work performed indoors is generally with ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional office equipment as found in a typical office environment.
- Work outside involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
- Frequent conference-wide travel;
- Frequent, prolonged, and irregular hours; frequent evening/weekend hours; travel as needed.

- Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 50 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, and pulling frequently. Proper lifting techniques are required
- Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to perform athletic training techniques, use a keyboard, operate equipment, and read technical information
