Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
As the Exploration Geologist, you will support exploration and resource development through detailed core and chip logging, geologic interpretation, and data integration. The role requires interest in economic geology and direct experience working with copper porphyry systems. The selected candidate will contribute to identifying new opportunities and improving geological understanding in a collaborative environment that values professional growth and new challenges.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Demonstrate commitment to safety and Capstone’s Values in Action.
- Drilling Program Support: Design, coordinate, and oversee exploration, infill, and ore control drilling programs, including on-site duties and blast hole sampling activities.
- Geological Data Collection & Analysis: Perform detailed logging of drill core, chip samples, and pit wall mapping. Ensure accurate and timely sampling, QA/QC, and geological data entry.
- Geological Modeling: Interpret geological data to develop and maintain 3D geological models, resource models, and geometallurgical datasets in partnership with the Metallurgy Department.
- Ore Control & Resource Management: Provide geologic controls to operations, support ore control workflows, and reconcile long-term resource models, ore control models, and truck dispatch data.
- Database Management: Manage and maintain geological databases (acQuire, SQL) to ensure data accuracy, accessibility, and compliance with QA/QC standards.
- Cross-Department Collaboration: Work with the Metallurgy and Mill teams to establish relationships between rock types, mineralogy, grade, and mill recovery, identifying opportunities for process improvement and metal recovery.
- Planning & Budgeting: Provideinput into the annual budgeting process for geology, monitor costs, and ensure efficient allocation of resources.
- Continuous Improvement & Best Practices: Contribute to refining geological workflows, integrating new technologies, and applying industry best practices to enhance operational excellence.
- Take on additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and initiative.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geosciences, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in exploration or mine geology, preferably in porphyry copper deposits.
- Experience with core and chip logging in exploration or mining projects.
- Understanding of sampling procedures and QA/QC best practices.
- Knowledge of drill–blast–load–haul open-pit mining sequence.
- Knowledge of geology theories and practices related to open-pit copper mining, milling, and SX-EW operations.
- Experience with geological modeling tools and ore control software (e.g., Vulcan, acQuire, MineSight, Leapfrog).
- Intermediate to strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
- Strong communication, teamwork, and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative.
- Comfortable working in both field and office environments.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to speak, comprehend, read, and write English.
Preferred
- Master’s degree in Geology, Geosciences, or a related discipline.
- Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) designation or equivalent certification, or eligibility for registration.
- Experience in geometallurgy, pit wall mapping, and reconciliation processes.
- Familiarity with advanced geological software and data management practices.
- Strong interest in economic geology.
- Copper or base metal mining experience, particularly in open-pit settings.
Work Environment
- 70% of the Geologist’s time will be spent in the field while the remaining 30% will be spent in an office environment.
All candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol test, and background check. All positions require a pre-placement physical examination to ensure candidates are 'fit for duty’. Additional training and/or testing may be required.
