About Coach Across America

Founded in 2010, Coach Across America is a national service organization dedicated to inspiring youth to achieve their potential by providing coaches trained in positive youth development. We do this by identifying, training, and supporting coaches who bring sports-based youth development to their communities.


About HoopGirls DC

HoopGirls DC is an all-girls basketball program that strives to build strong bodies, strong minds, and future leaders through the game of basketball. The HoopGirls basketball program teaches confidence, perseverance, toughness, team spirit, sportsmanship, and leadership. HoopGirls is focused on the ages of 8 through 13, and mixes players from different schools and neighborhoods, allowing the opportunity to build new friendships as well. There are no tryouts. All girls who sign up can learn to play the game and have fun too.


Role Title: HoopGirls Basketball Coach & Program Coordinator

Role Type:OJJDP Service Position

Service Term: 8-9 month position (900 hours between Jan./Feb. 2026 and Sept. 30, 2026)

Living Allowance: $13,500.00

Education Award: $3,000 (upon successful completion of service hours)

Expected Hours Per Week: 30 hours per week on average

Primary Location: Based in Capitol Hill; multiple practice/game sites across DC

Key Responsibilities: Coach and coordinate winter basketball season, and develop spring/summer/fall programming with a focus on building skills year-round.


Coach Role and Responsibilities

The coach/program coordinator will support HoopGirls Winter Season in the Palisades League, as well as spring, summer, and fall clinics/programming, with a focus on building skills year-round. The coach will also support partnerships with other organizations to develop joint programs, including with other CAA coaches.


Responsibilities will include:


1. Support the Director of HoopGirls in organizing and coaching the HoopGirls Winter Season in the Palisades Basketball League January and February 2026.

  • Create weekly practice plans and support the winter league coaches in following guidelines, fundamental skill building, and advanced plays as needed.
  • Coach or Assistant Coach one of the Winter Season teams.
  • Support each of the teams coaches (15 volunteer coaches) for the six teams for the Winter Season assisting at practices, assisting at games as needed.
  • Attend all practices and select games (some of teams games overlap on Saturdays).
  • Serve as the liaison to the commissioner of the Palisades Basketball League, as needed.


2. Facilitate basketball clinics and day camps (schedule to be determined in coordination with the Director) during the spring, summer, and fall. This includes:

  • Scheduling gym times
  • Recruiting /outreach communications for participants
  • Coaching clinics and camps


3. Collaborate with other partners to develop joint basketball clinics/programs.


4. Develop and administer surveys and other methods of evaluation to gauge participant experience, including data collection activities directed by the Coach Across America Program Lead.


5. Encourage participants to gain and develop life skills, knowledge, and techniques through sport, using lessons learned at Coach Across Americas best-in-class training events.


6. Act as a role model, gaining the respect and trust of the community and youth served.


The coach will serve as part of She Changes the Game, an initiative by Coach Across America and Monumental Sports & Entertainment to build a DC-based hub of coaches dedicated to growing girls participation in sports.


Schedule for January & February

  • Sundays, 1:30-4:30 p.m. (at Gallaudet Model Secondary School; basketball practice; 6 teams).
  • Thursdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. (at B&G Club at THEARC; basketball practice; 6 teams).
  • Saturdays, Jan 10 through Feb. 28, game days at two separate locations.
  • Additional hours each week for planning, coordination, and communication with league, teams, and participating families (schedule to be determined in coordination with the coach and Director).


Spring, Summer, and Fall Schedule

  • Approximately two weeknight and one weekend basketball practices/clinics per week (schedule TBD in coordination with coach and director).
  • Regular weekday hours (approximately 4 hours per day on average) for planning, outreach, communications, coordination with program partners, etc. (specific days/times to be determined in coordination with the coach and Director).


Additional Requirements

Coach Across America coaches must complete the following requirements to ensure successful completion of the OJJDP service program:

  • Completion of the minimum required hours of service and training by the last day of the coach contract
  • Attendance at the Coach Orientation
  • Completion of bi-weekly timesheets
  • Attendance at days of community service
  • Attend/participate in Coach Across America trainings, meetings, and special initiatives
  • Attend Coach Training Institute (date to be announced by Coach Across America Program Lead)


Uniform Policy

Coaches must wear Coach Across America-branded t-shirts provided by Coach Across America when coaching and at program sessions and events.


Eligibility & Qualifications

  • The program is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents.
  • Volunteers must be 18 years old, or 17 with written parental/guardian consent.
  • Volunteers must have or be working toward a High School diploma, GED, or the equivalent.
  • Experience playing basketball at the high school or college level.
  • Experience coaching youth basketball teams or equivalent work with youth.
  • Positive approach to sharing information/teaching skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
