Wind Performance of Asphalt Shingles Intern
Job Description
Job Description
2026 Summer Internship — Wind Performance on Asphalt Shingles Internship
The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) is seeking interns to join our team this summer. As an IBHS intern, you’ll contribute to our mission of strengthening homes, businesses, and communities against severe weather—which means making a difference in the lives of real people. You’ll also work for a world-class organization where integrity and hard work are valued and where crash-testing homes and buildings is all part of the plan for discovering better building methods.

Purpose
The performance of asphalt shingles has historically been difficult to quantify. We seek to capture their performance using engineering reliability concepts to calculate failure probabilities for wind loads distributions derived from full-scale testing in the IBHS wind chamber.
Project Summary
The candidate will be involved with a number of experiments sharing the common goal of quantifying the performance of asphalt shingles in a real world, predictive sense. Measuring the uplift resistance of various asphalt shingle products will provide resistance distributions that are key components in the reliability analysis. Emphasis will be placed on replicating real world exposure, and sensitivity testing will be used to determine the most appropriate method of measuring uplift resistance.
We will also quantify the representativeness of ASTM D7158 by replicating the test setup on COMET and comparing load distributions to what is seen on the full scale. Our aim is to publish this work in a journal and use it to move the needle on improving current standard test methods for wind performance.
