Job Description

Lexington School for the Deaf, a historic institution founded in 1864, has been dedicated to providing exceptional educational services for deaf students. With a rich legacy and a commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment, we relocated to East Elmhurst, Queens in the late 1960s to better serve our community. As a non-profit, New York State-supported 4201 school, we proudly offer a tuition-free education, ensuring that every child has access to quality instruction tailored to their unique needs. Lexington School for the Deaf is seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated, and highly skilled Elementary School Teacher to join our team. This position involves delivering a comprehensive, individualized curriculum to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, in a supportive and inclusive learning environment. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for teaching, a strong commitment to the education of children with hearing impairments, and experience with bilingual instruction in both American Sign Language (ASL) and English. As an Elementary School Teacher, you will be instrumental in fostering students’ academic, social, and emotional development.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with the school’s curriculum for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
  • Deliver instruction using a combination of American Sign Language (ASL) and English, tailoring teaching methods to students’ unique communication needs.
  • Foster a positive, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment where students can thrive academically and socially.
  • Monitor and assess students' academic progress, adjusting instructional strategies to meet their individual learning needs.
  • Collaborate with other teachers, specialists, and staff to create and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, behavioral goals, and classroom activities.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training to remain current with educational trends, technologies, and best practices in teaching deaf students.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Special Education, Deaf Education, or a related field. A Master’s degree in Deaf Education or Special Education is a plus.
  • Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience, preferably with deaf or hard-of-hearing students in an elementary school setting.
  • Valid New York State teaching certification in Elementary Education (or eligibility for certification) is required.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL); ability to effectively teach both ASL and English to deaf students.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with students, parents, and staff.
  • Familiarity with assistive technologies and teaching tools, including FM systems, hearing aids, and digital learning platforms.
  • A deep commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment for all students.
  • Background check and fingerprinting required.
