This positions is during the day Monday-Friday onsite. Specific hours can be flexible.
General Purpose:
The purpose of the R&D Chemist is to conduct research, analysis, prototyping, and experimentation on thermoset composites/molding compounds for product and process development, application of qualitative and quantitative analyses, and improvement of analytical methodologies.
Essential Functions:
Responsibilities that are requirements in order to perform the job:
- Conducts research into composition, structure, properties, processing and reactions of thermoset molding compounds
- Performs and directs scientific investigations of new technologies involving complex experimental studies in support of R&D product development, new product opportunities, customer prototyping, and process optimization activities
- Develops formulas, processes and methods for solution of technical problems
- Analyses data and prepares test reports for assigned R&D projects
- Confers with peers regarding research and prepares technical papers and reports in support of projects and new product opportunities
Supportive Functions:
In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of supportive functions based on business needs:
- Provides work direction for technicians and process operators, interacts with customers, vendors and other company locations to coordinate product/process development, improvement, and cost effectiveness
- Participates in new product evaluation activities and technology assessments, as required, serves as an R&D spokesperson on specialized projects and programs
- Participates in determining the short- and long-term research activities, works under consultative directions towards predetermined long range goals
- Integrates R&D programs with company-wide strategies

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Exceptional customer focus skills, ability to make decisions, and be results driven
- Should be able to set priorities, problem solve, and learn on the fly
- Should have the ability to type and navigate a computer, Microsoft Office programs, and the Internet, as well as learn new systems that are needed to perform job functions
- Should be able to express oneself clearly in writing emails, communicating internally and externally, and writing basic test reports
- Statistical and probability math skills are needed
Education/Experience Guidelines:
- Bachelors degree (B.A./B.S.) in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering from a four-year college
- 0 to 3 years of related experience in an R&D role, manufacturing development environment, and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
- Training and experience with FMEA and DOE; training completion certificates desired
- Experience or education with Materials Science is preferred
